Idris Elba nearly missed receiving his knighthood due to a miscommunication involving a letter that “got lost in a pile of post.” The acclaimed actor, recognized in the New Year Honours list for his contributions to youth welfare and his campaign against knife crime in the UK, discovered the consideration letter just two days before the acceptance deadline.
During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, the 53-year-old star shared his experience. “I haven’t had the sword on the shoulder yet, but my wife is loving it,” he remarked, acknowledging the unusual circumstances surrounding his knighthood. Elba explained that the letter, which he needed to respond to, was overlooked amid other mail.
“My agent told me that if I didn’t accept it would pass me by,” Elba said. “By the time I found the letter I had only two days to decide.” Fortunately, he responded in time and expressed gratitude for the recognition, particularly because it brought joy to his mother.
“I got it for services to young people, and I was thinking, ‘Hang on a minute, that’s great, but I’ve been acting for 30 years!'” Elba continued, emphasizing the significance of the honour. “It is actually a great honour, and my mum is so pleased.”
