A remarkable purple star sapphire weighing an astonishing 3,563 carats has been unveiled in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The Star of Pure Land is owned by a group of individuals who prefer to remain anonymous for security reasons. One of the owners revealed that the gem was discovered in a gem pit near the town of Rathnapura, known as the “city of gems.” The discovery occurred in 2023, when the owners purchased it along with several other stones. It was only two years later that they realized the exceptional value of the sapphire. Following this realization, the team sought certification from two reputable laboratories to confirm its authenticity and value.
According to Ashan Amarasinghe, a consultant gemologist, the Star of Pure Land stands out not only due to its size but also because of its well-defined asterism. “This is the largest purple star sapphire of its kind,” Amarasinghe stated during a media briefing. He emphasized the gem’s distinctive six rays of light, which are rare among star sapphires.
