Richard Dreyfuss, the acclaimed actor known for his roles in films such as Stand by Me and Jaws, has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming SharkCon event in Florida after being diagnosed with viral bronchitis. At 77 years old, Dreyfuss shared the news through a video posted on the SharkCon Instagram page, expressing his disappointment in not being able to attend.
In the video, Dreyfuss stated, “Hello cons, I’m very, very sorry to tell you that I’ve been diagnosed with viral bronchitis. And I’ve been told by my doctors I cannot fly.” He explained that the journey to the convention would require a five-hour flight, which his health condition prevents. Dreyfuss expressed his regret, noting, “I’m terribly sorry because I had planned to be there and had been looking forward to it.”
Health Concerns Prompt Cancellation
The event is sponsored by National Geographic and is set to take place this weekend. Dreyfuss emphasized his concern for the health of others, stating, “I didn’t want to get anyone else sick.” He acknowledged feeling “in a lot of pain” but remained focused on prioritizing his health.
“I feel terrible about not showing up,” he added, “and I’d feel worse about exposing you to this apparently very viral illness.” He reassured fans that there would be opportunities in the future to meet, promising, “I will make it my business to show up.”
Dreyfuss’s message conveyed both his humor and sincerity as he quipped, “I want you all to feel very sorry for me. And very sorry for yourselves.” He concluded by affirming that his health must come first.
Convention Response and Support from Peers
In light of Dreyfuss’s cancellation, SharkCon has issued a statement apologizing to attendees. The convention confirmed that all prepaid autographs and photo opportunities would be automatically refunded, requesting fans not to reach out for additional assistance. The refund process is expected to take between five to ten business days, plus any additional time required by banks.
Support has poured in from fellow actors, including Sharon Stone, who expressed her concern for Dreyfuss on social media. Stone wrote, “Honey, feel better. The world is not good without you, then come over and give me a hug.”
As Dreyfuss focuses on his recovery, fans and colleagues alike are wishing him a swift return to health, highlighting the strong community within the entertainment industry.
