Volvo has officially introduced the new EX60, a mid-size electric SUV positioned as the battery-powered alternative to the popular XC60. This model is designed to fit between the smaller EX30 and EX40 electric SUVs and the flagship EX90, marking the debut of the automaker’s new SPA3 dedicated electric vehicle (EV) platform. The EX60 is anticipated to arrive in Australia in late 2026 or early 2027, with a Performance variant expected to be available by mid-2027.
The EX60 is produced in Sweden, distinguishing it from some other Volvo models that are manufactured in China. Pricing details have not yet been confirmed, and the company has cautioned that initial production volumes will be “somewhat limited.” Buyers will have a choice among three battery options and three powertrains, which include single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations, designated as P6, P10 AWD, and P12 AWD. Each variant will feature 22kW bidirectional charging capability, depending on the country of sale.
Design and Features of the EX60
Volvo plans to offer the EX60 in various trims, including Plus and Ultra, with an entry-level Core grade to be introduced later. A rugged Cross Country version will also be available, featuring a wider track, 20mm additional height, and air suspension that can raise the vehicle by another 20mm. At higher speeds, the vehicle can lower itself to enhance aerodynamics.
The Cross Country model will showcase unique design elements such as enhanced wheel-arch cladding, upper door mouldings, and an exclusive Frost Green exterior paint finish. It will also come equipped with stainless steel skid plates and embossed Cross Country lettering on the bumpers.
Under the vehicle’s exterior, the EX60 employs a double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspension system, complemented by frequency-selective dampers, hydraulic shock absorbers, stabiliser bars, and coil springs for improved handling.
Volvo asserts that the carbon footprint of the EX60 aligns with that of the smaller EX30, while the P12 AWD variant is touted as the brand’s longest-range electric vehicle to date.
Interior and Technology Innovations
Inside, the EX60 features a minimalist design with a major focus on technology. It is equipped with a landscape-oriented infotainment touchscreen and a slim, high-mounted digital instrument cluster. Storage solutions include a central stack, a two-level centre console, and an expansive fixed-glass roof. Buyers can also opt for a premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system.
This model is the first from Volvo to utilize mega casting, a manufacturing technique that replaces numerous smaller components with larger recycled aluminium casts, aimed at improving production efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
The EX60 is built on the SPA3 platform, which is designed for ongoing hardware and software improvements. It utilizes Volvo’s Superset technology stack, featuring a Qualcomm 8255 CPU for enhanced processing speed. This advanced system enables the integration of Google Gemini, providing “lag-free, conversational AI” support.
With the launch of the EX60, Volvo expands its electric vehicle lineup to seven models, including the EX30, EX40, and EX90 SUVs, alongside the recently discontinued EC40, the new ES90 liftback, and the EM90 people mover exclusive to China. The EX60 is comparable in size to both the existing XC60 range and the recently unveiled XC70 plug-in hybrid crossover.
As Volvo prepares for the introduction of the EX60, the automotive industry watches closely, anticipating the impact this new electric SUV will have on the market in Australia and beyond.
