Angus Crichton has confirmed he will play as an inside centre when he transitions to rugby with the New South Wales Waratahs. The announcement follows Crichton’s signing of a two-year contract valued at $1.6 million with Rugby Australia and the Waratahs. This deal solidifies his future in the sport, allowing him to focus on securing a second NRL premiership with the Sydney Roosters before making the switch.
During discussions about his new role, Crichton emphasized that the only position being considered is inside centre, or No. 12. He expressed confidence in his ability to make an impact in that role, stating, “I think they’re looking at me to play No. 12, it’s the most natural progression, and I should be able to have an impact on games in that position.” His physical style of play is expected to suit the demands of the inside centre position, enhancing the midfield strength.
Waratahs Coach Envisions a Dynamic Midfield
Waratahs coach Dan McKellar supports Crichton’s assessment, indicating that the inside centre role is indeed where he sees the player fitting best within the team. McKellar referenced the successful transitions of other league players into rugby, particularly highlighting the case of Sam Burgess, who had a mixed experience playing both in the back row and at centre. “For me, that’s just setting them up for failure,” McKellar said, emphasizing the need to place players in positions that align with their strengths.
He further reinforced his view that Crichton is best suited for No. 12, although he mentioned that Crichton could potentially play in the outside centre position, No. 13, if required. McKellar believes that Crichton’s background as a league back-rower will be advantageous, given the physical demands of the midfield in rugby.
Crichton’s upcoming transition adds an exciting dynamic to the Waratahs, particularly with the prospect of him partnering with former Sydney Roosters teammate Joseph Suaalii. This combination could lead to a formidable midfield unit, promising both skill and physicality on the field.
As Crichton prepares for this significant career shift, he remains dedicated to achieving success in the NRL with the Roosters before fully committing to rugby. His experience as a former Australian Schoolboys representative positions him well for the challenges ahead, and his move is anticipated to attract attention from fans and analysts alike.
With the rugby season on the horizon, all eyes will be on Crichton as he embarks on this new chapter, aiming to make a mark in a sport that presents unique challenges and opportunities.
