BREAKING: Tausif Khan OAM has been recognized with an Australia Day Honours award for his outstanding contributions to the community. The announcement, made earlier today, highlights Khan’s dedication to building cultural and trade relationships since arriving in Brisbane in 1986.

At over 80 years old, Khan expressed his gratitude, stating, “It’s a great honour. I would like to thank the Australian Government – and the Queensland Government for helping facilitate the activities and endeavours that have got me this award today.”

Born in Agra, India, Khan’s journey began with higher studies in the UK, where he earned a degree in data electronics. His career path took him from Germany to Australia, where he has spent decades fostering connections among professionals across continents.

In 1992, Khan played a pivotal role in establishing the India Trade Centre, receiving support from then Indian High Commissioner in Canberra, Akbar Khaleeli. His leadership as Chair from 1992 to 2008 helped solidify trade relationships between India and Queensland, marking a significant period in bilateral ties.

Khan’s natural talent for connecting people led him to collaborate with the Chinese Club of Queensland and the Chinese Business and Professional Association, opening doors for Chinese businesses in the Indian market. His passion for cultural activities resulted in the formation of vital platforms such as the India Australia Society of Queensland and the Indian Cultural Association of Queensland.

Khan reflected on the past, saying, “I was part of an active and passionate team that built the first Indian association here.” These associations fostered community spirit through multicultural festivals and fairs, helping newcomers acclimatize to their new lives in Australia.

However, Khan acknowledges that the landscape has changed. He notes, “People in the community were really very helpful. Any new person that arrived, we would welcome them… Now, information is much more easily available, and many migrants already have friends or family to help them.”

Despite these changes, Khan proudly observes the growing contributions of the Indian community in various sectors, from hospitals to universities. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining a respectful and open mindset among new migrants, urging them to embrace Australia’s diverse culture.

“Your mindset matters,” Khan advises. “In Australia, we are all equal – we respect each other and care for one another. New migrants should arrive with an open mind, respecting every religion and every person.”

As the community celebrates Khan’s remarkable achievements, his story serves as an inspiring reminder of the impact one individual can have on fostering connections and building a thriving multicultural society in Australia.
