The Cleveland Cavaliers have secured president Koby Altman with a contract extension that will keep him with the franchise through the 2029-30 season. According to reports from ESPN on Monday, this decision follows the Cavaliers’ impressive performance, including a top seed in the Eastern Conference last season. Owner Dan Gilbert has recognized Altman’s efforts alongside his front office staff, which includes general manager Mike Gansey and assistant general manager Brandon Weems, with multiyear extensions.

The Cavaliers have achieved notable success, holding the third-best record in the NBA over the past three seasons and making playoff appearances each year. In the 2024-25 season, the team recorded the second-most wins in its history before being eliminated by the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference semifinals. This loss came despite significant injuries that sidelined key players such as Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, and De’Andre Hunter.

Altman’s representative, Bret Just from WME Basketball, finalized the terms of the new deal with the Cavaliers prior to the playoffs. Under Altman’s leadership, the team has successfully drafted significant talent, including Evan Mobley, the Defensive Player of the Year in 2021, and two-time All-Star guard Darius Garland in 2019. Additionally, Altman facilitated the trade for Jarrett Allen in 2021 and made the high-profile acquisition of All-NBA superstar Donovan Mitchell in 2022.

This offseason has also seen the Cavaliers bolster their roster. They acquired Lonzo Ball from the Chicago Bulls to fill the top reserve point guard position, re-signed Sam Merrill, and welcomed back veteran big man Larry Nance Jr.. Furthermore, Kenny Atkinson, who was named Coach of the Year, was brought on board last offseason.

Altman’s career with the Cavaliers began when he was promoted to general manager in July 2017, later advancing to president of basketball operations in 2022. This marks the third contract extension for Altman and his team, reflecting the ownership’s commitment to a patient and methodical approach to building a competitive franchise.

Gilbert has been proactive beyond the Cavaliers, leading the pursuit of a WNBA expansion team, which was awarded in late June. In addition, his ownership group is currently constructing a new 210,000 square-foot practice facility for the Cavaliers, underscoring their dedication to the team’s future success.
