new-411-million-st-george-hospital-building-set-to-open-soon

A new $411 million healthcare facility at St George Hospital is nearing completion and is expected to welcome patients in the coming months. This nine-storey building, located on Kensington Street, aims to centralize community and outpatient care, consolidating a variety of health services currently spread across multiple locations on the hospital campus.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns and Health Minister Ryan Park announced that final preparations are underway to ensure the facility and its staff are ready for the influx of patients. The new building represents the third and final stage of the hospital’s redevelopment, a project initiated over a decade ago as a response to the Code Red campaign, led by medical staff and community advocates seeking improved healthcare services.

Enhanced Services for Patients

Among the key features of the Stage 3 Redevelopment is the introduction of structured rehabilitation for patients recovering from brain injuries, a service previously unavailable at St George Hospital. Minister Park emphasized the importance of this service, stating, “Patients will benefit from specialized rehabilitation focused on helping them regain skills and return home safely.”

The new facility will also house a behavioural support unit, designed specifically for older patients facing cognitive challenges, including dementia and delirium. This innovative service aims to improve patient outcomes through targeted treatment and management.

In addition to these new services, the redevelopment complements earlier improvements, which include a state-of-the-art Emergency Department, a nine-level acute services building, and an upgraded birthing suite along with operating theatre enhancements. Collectively, these upgrades are expected to significantly enhance patient care and operational efficiency at the hospital.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The redevelopment project has not only aimed to improve healthcare but has also had a significant economic impact. It is estimated that the construction has directly supported 750 jobs, along with thousands of indirect jobs created throughout the project’s duration. This economic boost is crucial for the local community and reflects the broader commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure.

As the opening date approaches, further details about the services and operational readiness of the new building will be shared. For more information regarding the St George Hospital redevelopment, visit www.nsw.gov.au/st-george-hospital-redevelopment.
