The Chinese automotive manufacturer GWM has introduced its latest offering, the Wey V9X, a luxury plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) measuring an impressive 5,299 mm in length. This new SUV is set to enter a rapidly growing segment of large SUVs in China, appealing to consumers who increasingly favor spacious vehicles. The Wey V9X is expected to launch in Australia later this year as part of GWM’s premium sub-brand.
The V9X has recently surfaced in filings with the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), as reported by CarNewsChina. The SUV boasts dimensions of 2,025 mm in width and 1,825 mm in height, supported by a substantial wheelbase of 3,150 mm. For context, GWM’s Tank 500, a competitor comparable to the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series, measures 5,078 mm long, 1,934 mm wide, and 1,905 mm tall, with a shorter wheelbase of 2,850 mm.
Innovative Powertrain and Features
The Wey V9X will feature the new GWM One architecture, described as a versatile “super platform” designed to accommodate various vehicle types, including sedans and SUVs, alongside multiple powertrain options such as petrol, hybrid, electric, and hydrogen fuel-cell systems. The flagship SUV is anticipated to utilize a 175 kW turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor, achieving acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 4.4 to 4.7 seconds, depending on the battery charge level.
According to MIIT documentation, the V9X will also feature an 800V electrical architecture, providing a maximum electric range of 363 km. The vehicle will employ a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery, although the exact capacity has not been disclosed. Interior specifications suggest seating for six, including captain’s chairs in the second row and a bench seat in the third row.
Competitive Market Landscape
The Wey V9X arrives at a time of heightened competition in the large SUV market. Competing models include the recently announced electric BYD Great Tang and the Xpeng GX, both of which have generated significant interest. Other notable entrants in this segment include the Aito M9, Denza N8L and N9, Lynk & Co 900, Zeekr 9X, and the Nio ES8.
In addition to its competitive specifications, the V9X is expected to feature advanced technology, including a LiDAR unit that works in conjunction with various camera and radar systems to enhance active safety and driver assistance capabilities. Although the interior design has yet to be officially revealed, early indications suggest a contemporary and functional layout.
As the Wey brand expands its offerings, it currently includes the Lanshan (Blue Mountain) SUV, a smaller plug-in hybrid model measuring 5,156 mm long, alongside the Gaoshan people mover and the Mocha crossover SUV. While the debut of the Wey V9X in Australia is still uncertain, its introduction marks a significant step for GWM’s premium lineup in a competitive global market.
