Sydney’s Victoria Park transformed into a dazzling spectacle on March 5, 2024, as Fair Day marked the beginning of the city’s renowned Mardi Gras celebrations. Despite overcast skies and a damp start, the event attracted hundreds who enjoyed a vibrant display of colour, creativity, and community spirit.

The festivities featured a wide array of stalls showcasing food, retail, and entertainment, alongside popular activities such as karaoke and a canine pageant. Performers adapted to the weather by moving their preparation under cover, but as the rain cleared in the afternoon, the atmosphere brightened, allowing participants to revel in the lively celebrations.

Health Initiatives Take Center Stage

One of the key highlights of Fair Day was the presence of ACON, New South Wales’ leading LGBTQI health organization. They established a significant health information space, emphasizing sexual health and cancer screening. Attendees had the opportunity to get screened for lung cancer and take photos at a large inflatable CT machine.

According to ACON Chief Executive Michael Woodhouse, this initiative aimed to raise awareness about a new lung cancer screening program targeting former heavy smokers. “One of the great things about Fair Day is the huge cross-section of people from across the community,” Woodhouse stated. “We want everyone to know about the services that ACON runs, and we’re hoping to improve visibility for people who may not have accessed them before.”

ACON also provided bulk-billed appointments for discussions on sexual health, including information about PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) medication to prevent HIV. The organization offered cervical and breast cancer screenings, addressing a critical health need within the community. Woodhouse noted that last year’s Fair Day revealed many attendees were overdue for screenings, showcasing the event as an excellent opportunity for health services.

Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion

The entertainment lineup featured notable performances from Janice Robinson, the Melbourne pop band Blusher, and drag performer Courtney Act, among others. This year’s Mardi Gras theme, “Ecstatica,” serves as a rallying call for visibility, inclusion, and self-expression, inviting all to gather and celebrate.

The significance of the event extends beyond its immediate festivities. The 2026 Mardi Gras will commemorate 48 years since the inaugural gay rights parade in 1978. Today, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras remains one of the world’s largest LGBTQI festivals, continuing to champion diversity and community engagement.

As Fair Day concluded, the vibrant atmosphere underscored the resilience and unity of Sydney’s LGBTQI community, setting an uplifting tone for the upcoming Mardi Gras events.
