Construction for the new Bankstown Hospital has taken a significant step forward with the engagement of Hindmarsh Construction Australia to initiate site preparations. This project, valued at $2 billion, marks the largest single capital investment in a public hospital in New South Wales’ history and aims to enhance healthcare services for the rapidly growing Bankstown community.

The new facility will be strategically located in the heart of Bankstown’s central business district. The initial phase of construction, which includes demolition and site remediation, is expected to be completed by 2027. Once operational, the hospital will feature a multi-storey building housing acute health services, including emergency departments, operating theatres, and inpatient wards.

Investment and Community Engagement

Funding for this substantial project is supported by the Minns Labor Government, which allocated $1.3 billion in the recent 2025-26 NSW Budget towards enhancing health facilities and services across western Sydney. The government has also invested an additional $100 million to facilitate the relocation of the former TAFE NSW Bankstown campus, ensuring the new hospital can be constructed without significant delays.

The relocation of TAFE NSW to its new campus at Western Sydney University has already begun, with most training programs successfully moved. Community engagement is a priority, and information sessions will be held throughout 2026 to keep residents informed about the project’s progress and upcoming works. Residents are encouraged to participate and provide feedback through the project’s official website.

Official Statements Highlighting Community Impact

The announcement of Hindmarsh Construction’s appointment was welcomed by Ryan Park, the New South Wales Minister for Health. He stated, “The appointment of the early works contractor means we are another step closer to delivering the new Bankstown Hospital. The Minns Labor Government is getting on with the job of delivering the health infrastructure Western Sydney needs.”

Jihad Dib, Member for Bankstown, expressed excitement about the project, highlighting its potential to transform the local area. “When complete, the new Bankstown Hospital will be a transformative project for the Bankstown CBD. With the university and TAFE campus nearby, I’m excited by the study and job opportunities it creates,” he said.

Member for East Hills, Kylie Wilkinson, also emphasized the importance of this development for local families, stating, “It’s exciting to see work progressing quickly on the new Bankstown Hospital. This is welcome news for my community and an important step towards delivering a modern, world-class health facility.”

Leadership at the existing Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital is equally optimistic about the new facility. Paul Crowe, Acting General Manager, noted the efforts of the community and planning experts in shaping the project’s vision. He said, “I am especially grateful to the community, our staff and the planning experts for their feedback over the last 12 months to help us to make that vision a reality.”

Clinicians are also looking forward to the new hospital. Dr. Matt Smith, Co-Director of Emergency Medicine, remarked, “As a clinician, it is a rare opportunity to have a say on the building of a new hospital from the ground up. I know my colleagues and I are invested in this process.”

Community representative Sanna Sartawy expressed her delight at the progress, stating, “We are delighted that the new site is being prepared for construction. I am so happy the community has been able to contribute feedback on what the hospital will provide and look like.”

The new Bankstown Hospital project reflects a significant commitment to improving healthcare for the region and aims to address the needs of a diverse and growing population. With construction set to ramp up in the coming years, the local community can anticipate a modern healthcare facility that will serve them for generations to come.
