cafe-mogador-expands-with-new-bar-matbucha-on-st-mark-s-place

The owners of the renowned Moroccan restaurant Cafe Mogador are set to enhance their presence in the East Village with the introduction of a new bar named Matbucha. This expansion is confirmed by a liquor license application submitted to Manhattan Community Board 3. The bar will occupy the former site of East Village Social at 126 St. Mark’s Place, a move that signals a new chapter for the beloved dining establishment.

Established in 1983 by Rivka Orlin, Cafe Mogador has become an iconic fixture on St. Mark’s Place, known for its vibrant atmosphere and delicious Moroccan cuisine. Over the years, the restaurant has witnessed significant changes both in the neighborhood and within its own operations. Orlin faced serious health challenges during the pandemic, which nearly led to the restaurant’s closure. Fortunately, her son Danny Orlin and his cousin Jacob Ahiyon stepped in to manage the restaurant, ensuring its survival through difficult times.

Despite the challenges, the enduring popularity of Cafe Mogador remains evident. Diners are often met with long wait times, a testament to the restaurant’s appeal. In 2007, The New York Times noted the commitment of patrons who would “wait in line forever for brunch at Cafe Orlin, or Mogador.” Similarly, in 2014, The Village Voice described the restaurant’s “highly coveted tables outside,” highlighting the community’s affection for the establishment.

As Cafe Mogador approaches its fourth decade in operation, the introduction of Matbucha aims to streamline the dining experience for guests. Orlin envisions the bar as a welcoming space where friends can gather, enjoy small plates, and sip on drinks she personally prepares. “It’s a place where we can meet friends, people from all ages can sit, have a nice meze, a nice drink,” she shared with the community board.

While an official opening date for Matbucha has yet to be announced, the new venture is anticipated to enhance the overall experience at Cafe Mogador. As the East Village continues to evolve, this addition underscores the resilience and adaptability of local businesses.
