Newly appointed coach Tyrone Ross is feeling optimistic about the upcoming 2026 Hampden league season for the Port Fairy Seagulls, despite the departure of high-profile player Gary Rohan. Rohan, who joined Port Fairy for just one season, has signed with the Ocean Grove club in the Bellarine league, allowing him to be closer to his home and engage with Essendon’s VFL program in a coaching role.
Ross confirmed that the decision to part ways was mutual, stating, “With work commitments, unfortunately he won’t be able to commit to Port Fairy, so the club and Gary have mutually agreed for season 2026 to part ways.” He added that both parties maintain a positive relationship, wishing each other success moving forward.
Despite this significant loss, Ross remains confident in the talent available to him. He emphasized the club’s ambition to reach the finals, stating, “The expectation of them is they’re training Thursday nights with us.” Among those expected to contribute are four players based in Geelong: Lucas Edmonds, Darcy Troop, Jake Muir, and Olly Myers.
In discussing the long-term goals for the Seagulls, Ross highlighted the importance of fostering a positive club culture. “It’s not just for the years you coach but you’re always trying to make sure the culture around the club is a good culture for years to come, for the next coaches to take over,” he explained. This forward-thinking approach is evident in how the team has responded positively to the coaching staff.
The Seagulls are also facing additional changes this season. Alongside Rohan’s departure, forward Strahan Robinson will not be returning, and midfielder Kaine Mercovich has joined South Warrnambool. Additionally, Zeb McKenna has signed with Woorndoo-Mortlake in the Mininera and District league.
On a brighter note, Port Fairy has bolstered its roster with several new signings, including Troop, Muir, Jayden Brennan from Carrara, Eric Guthrie from Camperdown, Hamish Gleeson from Hawkesdale-Macarthur, Hamish Hobbs from Terang Mortlake, and basketball player Josh Dyson who plays for the Warrnambool Seahawks. Ross expressed particular enthusiasm for Hobbs, who has shown impressive potential on the training grounds. “He’s taken me by surprise a little bit, to be honest,” Ross remarked.
Port Fairy is set to kick off its season against Portland at Hanlon Park on April 11, 2026. As the team prepares for the challenges ahead, Ross’s commitment to establishing a strong foundation suggests that the Seagulls are poised for an exciting season.
