At the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio strongly dismissed speculation surrounding the potential trade of quarterback C.J. Stroud, labeling it as “moronic.” This assertion came as a response to ongoing rumors that had circulated following Stroud’s performance in the playoffs.

Caserio reassured fans and analysts alike during a press conference on March 5, 2024, stating, “We are not trading the guy. He’s our quarterback. He’s going to be playing quarterback for the Houston Texans in 2026.” This firm stance reflects the Texans’ commitment to their young quarterback, who was the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Stroud’s name emerged in trade discussions after a challenging playoff series that included a seven-turnover performance, notably a four-interception game against the New England Patriots in a 28-16 divisional round defeat. Despite these setbacks, Stroud’s overall season showcased significant achievements. He completed the season with 19 touchdowns, a completion rate of 64.5%, and threw for 3,041 yards across 14 games, including three games missed due to a concussion sustained in Week 9 against the Denver Broncos.

While Stroud’s recent performance raised questions about his trajectory, Caserio’s comments indicate that the Texans are focused on his development rather than considering outside trade opportunities. “He’s been a good player and won a lot of football games,” Caserio noted. “Quarterback is the hardest position to play in sports. He had some ups and downs—that’s natural for a position—but overall, he’s had a pretty significant impact on what we are as a program. … He’s not going anywhere.”

Stroud’s rookie year had set high expectations, as he became the fifth rookie in NFL history to pass for over 4,000 yards in a season and the first quarterback from Ohio State University to earn a Pro Bowl selection. His impressive touchdown to interception ratio of 23-to-4 further highlighted his potential. However, the Texans’ management is now tasked with finding ways to enhance his performance, especially after a less prolific follow-up season.

As discussions around Stroud’s future continue, it remains clear that the Texans are committed to their young quarterback, aiming to build a competitive team around him. Caserio’s statements reinforce the organization’s belief in Stroud’s abilities and potential for growth within the franchise, as they look toward the upcoming seasons with optimism.
