WA Food Ambassador Don Hancey, centre, will bring the Kids in the Kitchen initiative to Wagin Woolorama, which has inspired young people towards a career in the hospitality and tourism industry.
UPDATE: The inaugural Kids in the Kitchen Competition kicks off at this year’s Wagin Woolorama, set to inspire young chefs to showcase local produce. WA Food Ambassador Don Hancey is leading this exciting new initiative, which aims to empower youth with essential cooking skills and healthy eating habits.
The competition is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, 2024, at 1:45 PM, in the entertainment area behind the Wine Baa, immediately following live cooking demonstrations by Hancey. These demos will occur Friday at 2 PM and Saturday at 10:30 AM. Hancey emphasizes that the competition links children to potential career pathways in hospitality and tourism, aiming to enrich their culinary knowledge while celebrating Western Australia’s diverse food culture.
“We hope to foster community spirit and cohesion through regional events and activities throughout the year,” Hancey stated. The competition will feature nine contestants aged 10 to 16, each tasked with preparing their unique recipe on stage within a tight 30-minute timeframe. Three judges will evaluate the dishes based on taste and the effective use of local ingredients.
Coordinator Simone Klose of Down South Creative described the initiative as a “culinary revolution,” offering young participants a gateway to countless opportunities. “The real value lies in the experiences gained and connections forged,” Klose noted, highlighting the importance of community growth.
The Kids in the Kitchen initiative is expected to become an annual highlight in WA’s culinary calendar, with plans for participation in events such as the Kununurra Agricultural Show in July and the Esperance Agricultural Show in October.
