URGENT UPDATE: Two men have been charged in connection with the shocking kidnapping and murder of 85-year-old Chris Baghsarian. The suspects, aged 29 from Kenthurst and 24 from Castle Hill, were arrested by heavily armed police at multiple locations in Sydney’s northwest just days after the discovery of Mr. Baghsarian’s remains in bushland.
Authorities confirmed that the remains, found near a golf club on Tuesday, belong to Mr. Baghsarian, who was allegedly taken from his home in North Ryde about 11 days ago in a case of mistaken identity. The suspects are set to appear in Blacktown Local Court on Thursday.
Detective Acting Superintendent Andrew Marks stated, “It’s somebody’s worst nightmare, right? These people need to be held to account for that, and that’s why we are bringing these people before the courts.” Police believe the kidnapping was intended for ransom, with reports suggesting a staggering demand of $50 million was made.
During the raids at the suspects’ properties in Kenthurst, Castle Hill, and a third location in Lake Macquarie, investigators seized vehicles, electronics, and clothing pertinent to the ongoing investigation. The intended target of the abduction was reportedly a relative of underworld-linked Sydney businessman Dimitri Stepanyan, who lived on the same street as Mr. Baghsarian. The police have indicated that the intended kidnapping was likely aimed at securing a ransom payment.
Mr. Baghsarian’s family described the harrowing ordeal of the kidnapping as a “nightmare,” expressing relief that the alleged offenders are now in custody. They have requested privacy to process the devastating loss of their beloved father, brother, uncle, and grandfather, who they say “would never hurt a fly.”
