Apple has introduced the new iPhone 17e, a budget-friendly smartphone, alongside a faster version of the iPad Air. This launch marks the beginning of a series of product announcements from the tech giant. Both devices will be available for pre-order starting March 5, 2026, with sales commencing on March 11, 2026.
The iPhone 17e features a starting price of $999 AUD in Australia and comes in pink, black, and white. It enhances its predecessor, the iPhone 16e, by incorporating a more powerful processor, new in-house wireless chips, and MagSafe magnetic charging. The design retains the 6.1-inch screen size and overall appearance of the previous model, while the front glass is now more durable, similar to the standard iPhone 17.
In terms of specifications, the iPhone 17e is powered by the A19 chip, which is also used in the regular iPhone 17. Additionally, it features a single 48-megapixel rear camera and comes with 256 gigabytes of storage as its base offering, doubling last year’s entry-level storage.
Updated iPad Air and Market Competition
The redesigned iPad Air maintains the same look as its predecessor but upgrades to the M4 processor, resulting in a performance boost of 30%. Like the iPhone 17e, the new iPad includes Apple’s in-house components, including the C1X cellular modem and N1 wireless chip, with support for Wi-Fi 7. The pricing for the 11-inch iPad Air is set at $999 AUD, while the 13-inch model is priced at $1,349 AUD.
With the iPhone 17e, Apple aims to compete in the mid-tier smartphone market, going head-to-head with similar offerings from Samsung, Google, and various Chinese manufacturers. This model is particularly aimed at emerging markets such as India, where consumers tend to opt for more affordable devices.
The differences between the “e” line and standard iPhones are notable, especially regarding camera capabilities, battery life, and display features. The iPhone 17e does not include a high refresh rate for its display nor does it feature Apple’s Dynamic Island interface.
Looking ahead, Apple is set to release more iPhone models later this year, including the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, which are expected to feature internal enhancements and improved camera technology. Also on the horizon is the anticipated debut of a foldable iPhone, a venture into a market that has been largely dominated by Samsung over the past decade.
Apple’s iPad lineup performed strongly during the recent holiday season, surpassing Wall Street’s expectations. The iPad business generated $8.6 billion USD in revenue for the December quarter, reflecting a 6.3 percent increase from the previous year. With these new introductions, Apple aims to maintain that momentum and continue its growth in the competitive technology landscape.
