Australian theatre and drag artist Trevor Ashley has garnered a nomination for a prestigious Olivier Award as he navigates a challenging situation in the United Arab Emirates. Recognized for his performance as Roger DeBris in the West End production of The Producers, Ashley’s nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical arrived while he was attempting to leave Abu Dhabi amid escalating conflict in the region.
The Olivier Awards, akin to the Tony Awards in the United States, represent the pinnacle of achievement in British theatre. Ashley received the news of his nomination through a text from his producers in London while grappling with the fallout from a week-long holiday that took a dangerous turn. Air travel disruptions due to the unrest left him stranded, amplifying the emotional weight of the moment.
“It has been very scary,” Ashley expressed in an interview with the Daily Telegraph from the UAE. He described his reaction to the nomination as “completely surreal” and revealed, “I cried, I just sat there sobbing.” Reflecting on the chaotic circumstances, he added, “It does feel like a movie; things don’t normally happen like this. This was always my dream.”
After overcoming the turmoil, Ashley confirmed on Instagram that he has safely returned to London. He acknowledged the impact of the recent events on his mental state but emphasized that “the show must go on” as he resumed his role in The Producers. He shared a heartfelt post capturing the moment he learned of his Olivier nomination, showcasing his emotional response.
Support from Theatre Community
The recognition has resonated widely within the theatre community, with notable figures such as Sir Ian McKellen and Alan Cumming reaching out to congratulate Ashley. “I was a little boy from Arncliffe, Rockdale, Bexley; it is insane. It is kind of crazy,” he remarked. “I can’t get over it. This is really special for me; the Brits can see what I can do. It doesn’t feel real.”
Ashley expressed immense gratitude for the support he has received since moving to London. “When I came to London to try to be a West End actor, they were so welcoming. The whole community has been incredible to me… I feel extremely grateful.”
The winners of the 2026 Laurence Olivier Awards will be announced at the Royal Albert Hall in London on April 12, 2026. This event promises to be a highlight in the theatrical calendar, celebrating outstanding achievements in the industry.
As the situation in the Middle East continues to develop, Ashley’s journey serves as a poignant reminder of the intersection between art and real-world challenges. His resilience and dedication to his craft shine through, even in the face of adversity.
