sunbury-gears-up-for-urgent-tree-planting-event-on-july-27

URGENT UPDATE: Sunbury is set to host a significant tree planting event on Sunday, July 27, from 10 AM to 1:30 PM, as part of the annual National Tree Day. Organized by the Hume Council, this initiative aims to mobilize community members to plant over 3,000 native grasses and wildflowers at the Kokoda Drive native grassland reserve, enhancing local biodiversity.

This event is crucial as it builds upon last year’s efforts to restore native ecosystems, specifically targeting the endangered black-shouldered kite habitat. The community is invited to join this green initiative, contributing to the planting of local-native seedlings that will support wildlife in the region.

Participants will receive essential materials including gloves, sunscreen, and tools to assist with the planting. Refreshments will be provided, including water, tea, coffee, and a complimentary pizza lunch with fruit snacks. Volunteers are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather, bringing rain and windproof jackets, enclosed walking shoes, and reusable water bottles.

Council Deputy Mayor Naim Kurt stated, “Every year we plant thousands of seedlings to add to Hume’s 160,000 trees, and now we’re turning our attention to saving native grasslands. This year, we’re making a real impact by restoring one of Australia’s most endangered ecosystems.”

Since its inception in 1996, National Tree Day has seen the planting of 28 million trees across Australia, representing a vital commitment to environmental sustainability. This year’s event is an opportunity for everyone to engage directly with nature and contribute to local conservation efforts.
