URGENT UPDATE: Drivers in Canberra are facing staggering fines exceeding $500,000 following a crackdown on traffic violations facilitated by dashcam evidence. The ACT’s online reporting system has seen an influx of reports from outraged motorists, leading to more than 1,100 infringements issued from July 2024 to June 2025.

Authorities confirmed that the initiative, which allows residents to report traffic offences via video footage, has proven effective. Over 1,800 reports were submitted, with a significant number of offenders caught failing to stop at red lights, incurring a hefty $552 penalty. Detective Acting Inspector Sean Evans stressed the dangers of these reckless actions, stating that such behaviour puts everyone on the road at “significant risk.”

“Most violations stem from dangerous and selfish driving,” Evans warned. He urged drivers to “slow down and be patient,” noting that the longest wait for a green light in Canberra is approximately 90 seconds.

The crackdown has also seen fines issued for negligent driving and improper overtaking, with police releasing alarming footage showing high-speed lane changes and near-collisions involving large trucks. This shocking evidence underscores the need for accountability on the roads.

ACT Policing officials emphasize the online reporting system as a vital tool in enhancing road safety. “Police may not catch you running a red light, but the car behind you may, and if there’s video evidence, you can then be issued an infringement,” they stated. This system allows vigilant drivers to report unsafe behaviour effortlessly.

To report a violation, complainants must provide photographic or video evidence and may be required to submit a formal witness statement and attend court. Earlier this year, Scott Lee, the Chief Police Officer of ACT Policing, highlighted that this electronic service has streamlined resources, enabling officers to concentrate on more urgent matters.

As this enforcement initiative continues, ACT residents are urged to remain vigilant and report dangerous driving. With the stakes high, the message is clear: reckless behaviour will not be tolerated.
