URGENT UPDATE: A crucial community event aimed at tackling the rising issue of homelessness in the Macedon Ranges is set to take place on August 5, 2023. Hosted by the Macedon Ranges Council in collaboration with Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health, this event is designed to raise awareness and connect residents with vital local services.
According to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, homelessness in the Macedon Ranges has surged by 31.4 percent between the 2016 and 2021 Census. Mayor Dom Bonanno emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Homelessness is a complex issue that touches more lives than many people realize.”
The event will kick off at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute, with doors opening at 10:30 AM for an 11:00 AM start. Attendees can expect a networking expo beginning at 11:45 AM, where they will have the opportunity to meet local service providers and learn about available support. The event is free to the public, with no registration required.
Mayor Bonanno highlighted the significance of community initiatives, noting, “Events like this bring our community together, help reduce stigma, and connect people with the services and information they need.” He stressed the importance of collaboration to make meaningful progress in addressing homelessness.
In response to the pressing housing crisis, the Victorian Government has earmarked a minimum $30 million for the Macedon Ranges through its Big Housing Build initiative. However, only $12.5 million has been allocated thus far, raising concerns about the availability of the remaining $17.5 million. The council has reached out to the Victorian Government for confirmation on the funding allocation and is eager to explore partnerships for developing more local, affordable housing.
