community-braves-cold-for-bird-walk-along-toolern-creek

UPDATE: On July 19, 2023, the Eynesbury Environment Group hosted a guided bird walk along Toolern Creek, attracting seven brave participants despite frigid temperatures. The event commenced at the park named in honor of local conservationist Lyn Holdsworth, located beside the Western Highway bridge.

The weather was biting, with an icy wind making the outing a chilly experience. Nevertheless, participants were eager to explore the lush corridor that Toolern Creek provides for wildlife, stretching from Toolern Vale in the north to Toolern Regional Park in the south, ultimately flowing to the Werribee River.

Participants walked along a paved footpath, hoping to spot a variety of bird species. Although the cold deterred many birds, a sudden chorus of honeyeaters signaled the presence of a large Brown Goshawk, which was seen gliding through the treetops multiple times, likely on the hunt for its next meal.

Despite the cold and fewer sightings, the group successfully recorded 21 bird species, including the vibrant Rainbow Lorikeet, Wood Ducks, and Crested Pigeons. Notably, the Wood Ducks were spotted investigating tree hollows, signaling the approach of spring. Participants even encountered some Wood Ducks at the playground, seemingly seeking food from visitors.

Participants were reminded that while feeding ducks is common, offering them bread can lead to serious health issues. Instead, natural foods such as corn and peas are recommended for their proper nutrition.

The camaraderie among the participants made the cold weather worthwhile, proving that shared interests can bring warmth even in the chill.

For avid birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, this community event showcased the rich biodiversity of Toolern Creek and the importance of preserving such natural habitats.

The event is recorded on eBirdline, noting the bird species observed: Wood Duck, Black Duck, Brown Goshawk, Kestrel, Galah, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Eastern Rosella, Red-rumped Parrot, Rainbow Lorikeet, Spotted Dove, Crested Pigeon, Magpie, Little Raven, White-plumed Honeyeater, House Sparrow, New Holland Honeyeater, Indian Mynah, Blackbird, Starling, and Magpie-lark.
