Australia’s music scene celebrated a significant milestone as the iconic power ballad “Never Tear Us Apart” by INXS was named the top song in Triple J’s special edition Hottest 100 countdown dedicated solely to Australian artists. The annual event, which invites fans to vote on their favorite tracks, showcased the nation’s rich musical heritage, culminating in a result that reflects the enduring popularity of homegrown talent.
In a heartfelt acknowledgment of the achievement, Jon Farriss, founding member and drummer of INXS, expressed his gratitude during a live appearance on the radio station. “We feel so blessed and we’re very grateful,” he stated, capturing the sentiment of the band and their supporters.
Coming in at a close second was The Hilltop Hoods with their 2003 hit “The Nosebleed Section.” The top five also featured the Queensland pop duo The Veronicas with “Untouched,” Missy Higgins‘ breakout single “Scar,” and “Don’t Dream It’s Over” by Crowded House. The Veronicas, reflecting on their third-place finish, shared their emotional response. “For just two girls from Brisbane, this is such a huge honour for us,” said Jess Origliasso.
Missy Higgins joined in the celebrations, sharing her disbelief that “Scar” continues to resonate with audiences more than two decades after its release. “I can’t quite believe it—I feel like the luckiest person ever,” she remarked shortly after the song was played.
The countdown, which typically celebrates the best songs globally each year, featured a special mid-year poll for Australian artists as part of Triple J’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The event attracted over 2.65 million votes, marking it as the station’s fourth-largest poll to date. The results revealed intense competition, with eight songs separated by fewer than ten votes and only thirty votes distinguishing songs ranked 100 and 101.
Another notable mention was Gotye, who secured the tenth position with his 2011 hit “Somebody That I Used to Know.” Other esteemed Australian artists included John Farnham, placed at number 15 with “You’re the Voice,” and Daryl Braithwaite‘s “The Horses,” which ranked at number 30, followed closely by Natalie Imbruglia‘s “Torn” at number 32.
The countdown began at 10:00 AM AEST on March 15, 2024, and concluded at 8:00 PM, providing an engaging platform for fans to celebrate their favorite Australian hits. With its impressive turnout and the heartfelt responses from artists, this special edition of the Hottest 100 has solidified its place in the country’s musical legacy.
