wyndham-council-approves-annual-review-of-child-safety-policies

Wyndham Council has implemented significant changes to its approach to child safety and welfare. During the monthly council meeting on July 25, 2023, councillors unanimously approved an amended version of the council’s Child Safety, Wellbeing and Reportable Conduct Policy. This amendment introduces an annual review of the policy, moving away from the previous three-year review cycle.

The proposal, put forth by Cr Jennie Barrera, aims to enhance the accountability and transparency of the council’s practices concerning child safety. Cr Barrera emphasized the importance of documenting all review outcomes, including those without changes, to maintain a clear record of the council’s efforts in this critical area.

“Communities rightly expect local councils and other organisations to demonstrate zero tolerance for harm and strong safeguards for children,” Cr Barrera stated. She also highlighted the necessity for quicker responses in an industry characterized by high staff turnover.

Enhanced Accountability and Responsiveness

“This will embed child safety as a core, ongoing organisational responsibility, not something tied to individual champions, especially in environments of staff turnover,” Cr Barrera added. The amendment is designed to facilitate the early identification and response to potential gaps or risks in policy implementation.

Cr Barrera also pointed out that annual reviews would reflect the council’s commitment to not being complacent while actively striving to meet community standards. “Child safety is not optional; it’s not occasional—it’s foundational, it’s urgent, and it’s non-negotiable,” she asserted.

In support of the changes, Cr Josh Gilligan emphasized the need for a collective response from the council. He stated, “It is important that we send a message to our community that as a local government of an area that has a significant population of people under the age of four, we are committed to safeguarding our children.”

The council’s decision to reform its childcare policy marks a proactive step towards ensuring the safety and welfare of children in the community. By committing to annual reviews, Wyndham Council aims to enhance its role as a protector of child welfare, reinforcing its dedication to the community it serves.

The updates to the policy reflect an understanding of the evolving landscape of childcare and the importance of maintaining robust safety measures. As local councils continue to adapt to the needs of their communities, Wyndham’s initiative serves as an example of prioritizing child safety and accountability.
