Red Bull Racing has dismissed Christian Horner from his dual roles as team principal and chief executive, marking a significant shift for the Formula 1 team. According to Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko, the decision was primarily driven by a decline in on-track performance, which followed a dominant era that saw Max Verstappen secure four consecutive drivers’ titles from 2021 to 2024. Horner’s departure, announced in early July 2025, concludes over 20 years of leadership at one of the sport’s most successful teams.

The announcement comes after a turbulent period for Red Bull, which included the departure of key figures such as legendary designer Adrian Newey. In addition to performance issues, Horner faced allegations of inappropriate behavior made by a female colleague in February 2024. Although he denied these claims, an internal investigation cleared him, concluding after an appeal by the complainant.

Speaking to Sky Germany ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, Marko elaborated on the management’s decision. “The decision was made by the management—that is, Oliver Mintzlaff, head of sporting projects at Red Bull. We informed Christian Horner of it in London. At the same time, we officially thanked him for 20 years and eight world titles,” Marko said. He emphasized that while various factors contributed to the decision, performance was the main concern.

New Leadership and Future Goals

Following Horner’s exit, Mekies has been promoted from his role managing Red Bull’s junior team, Racing Bulls. His tenure begins as the team aims to close the gap on McLaren, which has demonstrated strong form with a one-two finish at the recent Belgian Grand Prix. Marko expressed confidence in Mekies’ engineering background, stating, “He’s an excellent engineer, which is a good fit considering the complex technology in Formula 1.”

Mekies’ appointment aligns with a broader trend in the sport, where teams increasingly favor leaders with engineering expertise. Marko noted that the scope of Mekies’ responsibilities has been streamlined, allowing him to focus primarily on racing. “The company has 2,000 employees. Mekies will mainly focus on the technical side and racing,” he added, indicating that marketing and other projects will be handled by separate departments.

Verstappen Responds to Team Changes

Speculation arose that Horner’s dismissal was also related to concerns about keeping Verstappen with the team amid rumors linking him to a potential move to Mercedes. Verstappen responded to these speculations during the Belgian Grand Prix, reaffirming his strong relationship with Horner. “They decided to change. I’m fine with everything,” he said when questioned about the decision.

Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, had previously called for Horner’s departure earlier in 2024, shortly after the allegations surfaced. However, when reminded of his earlier comments, Verstappen clarified, “That was one and a half years ago. It’s different now. I have nothing to say. It’s fine.”

As Formula 1 heads into the Hungarian Grand Prix, the team will be looking to adapt to this leadership change while striving for improved performance on the track. The upcoming race will be crucial for Red Bull as they aim to regain their competitive edge.
