UPDATE: Tens of thousands are set to march across the Sydney Harbour Bridge today at 1 PM in a major demonstration calling for support for Gaza. This pro-Palestine protest, organized by the Palestine Action Group, comes in response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for solidarity.

Earlier today, the Supreme Court of New South Wales confirmed the protest’s legality after Justice Belinda Rigg dismissed an application from NSW Police for a prohibition order. The police sought to limit the march, which is expected to draw massive crowds, citing safety concerns. Justice Rigg noted the protest’s timing was a direct response to the “dramatic increase in the known suffering of Gazan citizens.”

In her ruling, Justice Rigg emphasized that ground rules for protests, including strict prohibitions against any form of racism or antisemitism, were well established and communicated to participants.

“This message has been put forward repeatedly through social media events pages and announcements at the protests,”

she stated.

The march will commence at Lang Park, located at the corner of York, Grosvenor, and Lang streets, before proceeding across the iconic bridge to North Sydney. As a result, significant traffic disruptions are anticipated. The bridge will be closed to vehicles in both directions from 11:30 AM to 4 PM, although trains will continue to operate across the bridge, and the harbour tunnel will remain open to motorists.

Despite offering to postpone the march to allow for better coordination with police, the Palestine Action Group reported that their proposal was not engaged by the authorities. The police application, if granted, would have exposed protesters to a wider range of criminal sanctions, yet Justice Rigg’s ruling affords them limited immunity against obstructing traffic during the event.

The impact of this protest is significant, as it is expected to galvanize public attention towards the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. With ongoing military actions and rising civilian suffering, today’s demonstration seeks to amplify voices advocating for peace and justice.

As the protest unfolds, additional street closures will affect key routes, including the Cahill Expressway and various sections of Pacific Highway and Blue Street. Transport for NSW has advised commuters to plan alternative routes and expect delays.

This live coverage will continue as the situation develops, providing updates on the march and its implications for both participants and the broader community. Stay tuned for real-time updates on this urgent event as Sydney stands together in solidarity for Gaza.
