UPDATE: Police have been called to two separate football matches in Melbourne’s north-west after violent altercations disrupted play over the weekend. The first incident occurred on August 2, 2023, at around 9:00 PM during a match between Hoppers Crossing and North Sunshine at Hogans Reserve.
Reports indicate that chaos erupted when possibly up to 100 people became involved in a fight, starting on the field and spilling into the stands. A police spokesperson confirmed that officers were dispatched after multiple emergency calls were made to triple-0.
Although the situation had calmed by the time police arrived, authorities maintained a presence to ensure the safe exit of players and spectators. Officers requested a large group of unruly attendees to vacate the area. As a result of the melee, a 19-year-old man from Hoppers Crossing and an 18-year-old man from Werribee were arrested for failing to comply with police directions.
While no injuries were reported at the scene, it has since come to light that a 33-year-old man from Little River sought medical treatment for injuries sustained during the incident. He has declined to provide a statement to authorities. Police are actively seeking further information regarding the confrontation and urge anyone with details to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online.
The match was halted with Hoppers Crossing leading 9.2 (56) to 6.8 (44) when the violence erupted.
Less than 24 hours later, another police intervention was required at Salesian College in Sunbury during a reserves match between Rupertswood and Northern Saints. Authorities were alerted to reports of an altercation during the game. Although teams were separated and no formal reports were filed, police confirmed that there were no injuries associated with this incident.
As investigations continue, the community remains on edge. The surge in violence at local sporting events raises questions about safety and crowd management. Local officials are urged to implement measures to prevent future disruptions.
