URGENT UPDATE: A man wearing a Scream mask has been identified as the vandal behind multiple graffiti attacks on the historic Melbourne Hebrew Congregation in South Yarra, with incidents spanning from March 11 to July 30. Authorities confirm that the suspect struck the synagogue five times, escalating his actions to include hate-filled messages during Israel’s ongoing conflict with Iran.

CCTV footage captured the suspect approaching the synagogue on an e-scooter before defacing it with offensive graffiti. The July incidents, which took place on July 22 and July 30, specifically featured the notorious horror movie mask, alarming local officials and community leaders.

Police allege that the man utilized different disguises during his vandalism spree, including a bandana, but consistently left behind messages like “Iran is Da Bomb” and “Free Palestine.” These actions have drawn condemnation from community leaders, with Rabbi Shlomo Nathanson declaring them “un-Australian” in an interview with The Age.

“There is absolutely no place at all in our society for hate-based behaviour,” a spokesperson for Victoria Police stated, emphasizing the need for community vigilance against such acts.

The Melbourne Hebrew Congregation holds a significant place in history, being the oldest Jewish congregation in the city, founded in 1841. This recent surge of vandalism highlights a growing concern over antisemitism and hate crimes in Australia, stirring emotions among local residents.

As the investigation continues, police urge anyone with information about the incidents to come forward. Community leaders are rallying to support the synagogue and condemn the violence, stressing that differing opinions on international politics should never translate into local acts of hatred.

WHAT’S NEXT: Authorities are actively tracking the suspect, and additional patrols around the synagogue are expected to ensure the safety of the community. Residents are encouraged to remain alert and report any suspicious activities, as police work to bring the perpetrator to justice.
