UPDATE: Bacchus Marsh Cobras have triumphed over the Darley Devils in a gripping qualifying final of the Ballarat Football League, securing a decisive 59-34 victory on Sunday, September 24, 2023. This match marked an intense start to the women’s finals, underscoring the fierce local rivalry between the two teams.

The Cobras rallied after trailing by seven points at halftime, capitalizing on a pivotal third quarter where they netted three goals, effectively turning the game in their favor. The final quarter saw the Cobras finish strong, adding another three goals to seal their win.

“We’re very happy with the win,” said Cobras coach Alan Johnson. “The rivalry is there and it’s a good healthy rivalry. It’s good to win in a finals.” Johnson acknowledged the strong start from the Devils, who kicked the first few goals of the match, but noted that an ankle injury to Lilli Condon, the reigning league best and fairest winner, significantly impacted Darley’s momentum.

“I hope she is OK. It’s disappointing to see good players like that get injured,”

Johnson added, reflecting on the injury’s effect on the game.

Isabella Faralla and Charli O’Connor stood out for the Cobras, each scoring two goals. Johnson praised the team’s collective effort, highlighting key players like Mel Freeman, Chloe Walker, Dakota Simo, and Remy Day for their strong performances. Notably, Simo played her second game and first final, having transitioned from the club’s under-19s.

For the Devils, Kim Bessell scored three goals, while Eliza Wilson-Macdonald, Chloe Oughtred, and Jaye Dalgleish were recognized as standout performers.

With this victory, the Cobras find themselves in a familiar position, aiming for a grand final spot. They will face Redan next Sunday, September 30, 2023, in one of their two opportunities to secure a finals berth. Johnson acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, “It will not be easy. We know there is a challenge ahead. They have been really dominant in a couple of games but the last one was tight.”

Meanwhile, the Devils will face East Point in a knockout semi-final on the same day, as they seek a chance to keep their finals hopes alive.

This thrilling encounter not only showcased the competitive spirit of the Ballarat Football League but also highlighted the emotional stakes for both teams as they vie for glory in the finals. The urgency of the upcoming matches adds to the excitement as fans rally behind their teams in this critical stage of the season.
