UPDATE: Three men have been charged in a significant police crackdown on dangerous motorcycle stunts being performed for social media. The men, aged 24, 22, and 23, are linked to a group of hoon riders whose reckless acts have raised serious safety concerns on Melbourne’s roads.
The suspects include a 24-year-old from Caroline Springs, a 22-year-old from Hillside, and a 23-year-old learner rider from Tarneit. Authorities have been investigating this group over the past few months following numerous reports of perilous driving practices on local freeways.
Officials allege that on February 21, between 10:30 PM and 11:30 PM, the riders executed synchronized stunts on CityLink, specifically between Port Melbourne and Pascoe Vale. Eyewitness accounts suggest that they were traveling at speeds of up to 160 km/h, more than double the legal limit, while performing dangerous maneuvers such as ‘wheelies’ and weaving through traffic.
In a deliberate attempt to evade law enforcement, the riders reportedly removed or concealed their motorcycle registration plates before entering CityLink. Documentation of these stunts was shared on social media, with videos captured by a person filming from a moving vehicle or using a drone.
Police executed search warrants early in June across several suburbs, including Brookfield, Caroline Springs, Hillside, and Tarneit. During these operations, authorities seized two motorbikes, multiple mobile phones, GoPros, computers, protective gear, and even two imitation firearms along with a small amount of drugs.
The charges filed against the trio include reckless conduct endangering life, obtaining financial advantage by deception, and causing public nuisance. They have been released on bail and are scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
This ongoing investigation is intensifying, with police indicating that additional charges against other individuals involved are forthcoming. The community remains on high alert as authorities work to ensure road safety and hold those responsible accountable.
