The Indianapolis Colts have announced that Anthony Richardson will start as quarterback in their preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens on August 10, 2024. This decision comes as part of the team’s ongoing evaluation process to determine their primary quarterback for the upcoming season. Head Coach Shane Steichen made the announcement following a joint practice with the Ravens, where both Richardson and fellow quarterback Daniel Jones showcased their skills against a formidable defense.
Steichen emphasized that the choice to start Richardson is part of a broader strategy to closely assess both quarterbacks throughout practices, joint scrimmages, and preseason games. The Colts plan to rotate their quarterbacks, with Daniel Jones set to start in the second preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on August 16, 2024, in Indianapolis.
During the practice on Tuesday, both quarterbacks demonstrated impressive performances, although no definitive separation occurred between them. Steichen remarked, “I thought there were some really good things being done offensively. I thought both quarterbacks did some really good things.”
Richardson is expected to play for approximately “a quarter and a half” against the Ravens, while Jones is slated for about “half a quarter.” It is important to note that the Colts will not field several key starters, meaning Richardson will be without some essential offensive playmakers and linemen. Similarly, the Ravens are also anticipated to rest their starting players.
Richardson has been the Colts’ starting quarterback for the past two seasons but has faced challenges with consistency, completing only 50.6% of his career passing attempts. Injuries have also impacted his performance, as he has missed 17 games throughout his tenure. In contrast, Jones seeks to revitalize his career after being released from the New York Giants, where he fell from starting status. He joined the Colts on a one-year, $14 million contract.
Steichen has committed to avoiding a rushed decision regarding the starting quarterback position. He has expressed his willingness to wait until after the preseason to finalize his choice. As the Colts continue to evaluate their options, the upcoming preseason games will provide critical insights into the team’s future direction at quarterback.
