bulldogs-coach-beveridge-discusses-defensive-upgrades-and-silvagni-interest

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge expressed confidence in the team’s defensive improvements, which he believes will bolster their chances for the premiership. While discussing the potential addition of Carlton’s Jack Silvagni in 2026, Beveridge remained tight-lipped about the situation, only acknowledging the heightened interest from multiple clubs.

The Bulldogs face competition from Collingwood and Essendon, both reportedly vying for Silvagni’s signature as he approaches free agency. Beveridge chose to maintain discretion regarding his club’s interest, stating, “I think with any free agent like Jack, every club’s antenna is up.” He emphasized the importance of respecting current players, many of whom are still uncontracted.

Beveridge added, “Some of our lads still uncontracted don’t need to be thinking too much about who might take their spot.” He also noted the need to respect Silvagni’s commitment to Carlton as he weighs his options for the future.

Defensive Strategy and Recent Performance

The Bulldogs’ defensive capabilities have faced scrutiny, particularly after conceding an average of nearly 14 goals per game during rounds 17 to 20, which included losses to top-four teams like Adelaide and Brisbane. Recently, however, the Bulldogs managed to restrict the Greater Western Sydney Giants to just six goals, a significant improvement that reflects their ongoing adjustments.

Beveridge highlighted the progress, stating, “The promising thing is, we were No.1 in defence going into the finals last year and we’re tinkering with it.” He noted that the team has shown defensive solidity in recent weeks, indicating that their tactical changes are beginning to pay off.

On the offensive front, the Bulldogs maintain the highest scoring average in the league, exceeding 108 points per game. Key players such as Aaron Naughton and Sam Darcy have been instrumental, with Naughton contributing 50 goals and Darcy adding 43. Beveridge remarked, “We have eked our way up to seventh on aggregate defensively and No.1 offensively. If we can now knock a few over, in a few weeks’ time it will look pretty healthy.”

Upcoming Matches and Playoff Aspirations

As they sit in ninth place, the Bulldogs must secure a win against Melbourne on Sunday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and triumph in their final two matches against West Coast and Fremantle to keep playoff hopes alive. Beveridge underscored the importance of a balanced team strategy, particularly in the ruck positions.

He indicated that young star Darcy may be rucking less to enhance the team’s offensive strength, with defender Rory Lobb expected to serve as a backup to Tim English. Beveridge noted, “He’s pivotal in that, and he’s a pretty good ruckman, Lobby.”

The Bulldogs are looking to capitalize on their recent form and improve their standings as the season draws to a close.
