Canning residents are being urged to report abandoned trolleys.

UPDATE: The City of Canning in Perth is launching an urgent campaign to tackle the growing problem of abandoned shopping trolleys littering suburban streets. Officials are calling on residents to report any trolleys left in public spaces and to return them after use.

Mayor Patrick Hall emphasized the negative impact of these abandoned trolleys on the community. “We know how frustrating abandoned trolleys can be. They create hazards, damage the look of our neighborhoods, and sometimes end up polluting our local waterways,” he said. This initiative aims to maintain safe, clean, and accessible public areas for all.

Residents are urged to refrain from taking trolleys out of shopping centers or their parking lots. Trolleys left on verges, footpaths, parks, and in local waterways not only create an eyesore but can also obstruct access, harm property, and negatively affect the environment.

Retailers bear the responsibility for any trolleys taken out of their premises. They are required to retrieve abandoned trolleys within 12 to 24 hours of being notified, depending on the location. Failure to comply may result in the city removing and impounding the trolley under local laws. If unclaimed, these impounded trolleys may be disposed of.

Penalties for leaving trolleys in public spaces can also be severe. Owners could face a fine of $250, with court-imposed penalties potentially reaching up to $5,000 for ongoing violations. The city is taking a strong stance against this issue to ensure a clean environment for residents and visitors alike.

Residents are encouraged to act quickly in reporting sightings of abandoned trolleys and to help spread awareness of this initiative. Together, the City of Canning aims to create a cleaner and safer environment for all.
