UPDATE: A seasoned diver was left “starstruck” after an extraordinary encounter with a critically endangered shark ray off the eastern coast of Australia. Joshua Whitney, who frequently dives at Kirra Reef on the Gold Coast, made the remarkable discovery just this past weekend.
Whitney, accustomed to swimming alongside turtles, bull rays, and hammerhead sharks, described the moment as akin to meeting a celebrity. “I just saw this massive shadow sitting on the bottom of the sea,” he recounted. “When it started swimming again, I wasn’t 100 percent sure what I was looking at.” The awe-inspiring moment lasted several minutes, though Whitney joked, “it could hold its breath a bit longer” before he needed to resurface.
Realizing he had encountered a shark ray, Whitney expressed his excitement: “I felt kind of starstruck. It was kind of like if you meet someone famous, but you don’t realize they’re famous until afterwards.” He likened his experience to meeting the “Brad Pitt of the ocean.”
The shark ray is a distinctive marine creature with large thorns on its head and a wide snout reminiscent of a ray, while its tail and dorsal fins are similar to those of a shark. Unfortunately, this unique species is facing extinction due to various threats. According to the Australian Marine Conservation Society, shark rays primarily inhabit the seafloor and often fall victim to trawl fishing, which indiscriminately captures marine life.
Moreover, shark rays are targeted for their fins, which are often cut off while the animals are still alive—a practice that has been criminalized in Australia. Whitney’s encounter highlights both the beauty and vulnerability of these remarkable creatures, emphasizing the urgent need for conservation efforts.
As news spreads of this rare sighting, diving enthusiasts and conservationists alike are reminded of the importance of protecting marine biodiversity. Authorities encourage the public to remain vigilant and support initiatives aimed at safeguarding these endangered species.
