BREAKING: Thousands flocked to the University of Newcastle’s Open Day on August 16, 2023, as students and families explored educational opportunities amid a surge of interest in higher education. With over 5,000 visitors attending the event, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement and aspiration at the Callaghan Campus.

Year 12 student Tiarna Baer, from Toronto High School, is among those eager to make her mark. She plans to pursue a degree in occupational therapy, stating, “I want to work with children specifically. I want to help them reach their goals and milestones.” Tiarna highlighted the open day as an invaluable chance to experience campus life firsthand and learn about the balance between academics and personal life. She added, “It’s my local university, so I don’t need to move away.”

Another attendee, Sharni Morris, traveled from Coffs Harbour with her family to attend the open day. Aspiring to study chemical engineering, she expressed her desire to represent Indigenous women in a historically male-dominated field. “I’ve heard great things about the university and its support for Indigenous students,” she said, emphasizing the welcoming environment at UON.

The event ran from 9 AM to 3 PM, featuring a variety of activities including live music, interactive demonstrations, and campus tours to engage potential students. Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky AO warmly welcomed attendees, stating, “Whether you’re a future student, a curious local, or just keen to soak up the atmosphere, everyone is welcome.” He noted that the University of Newcastle has served as an educational pillar for the community for over 60 years.

In addition to showcasing degree options, the open day provided Year 12 students with immediate support for applying through the Early Entry program. Students were encouraged to apply ahead of the first-round deadline on September 24, easing the stress during this crucial time in their academic journey.

For those unable to attend the Callaghan Campus event, the Central Coast campus is set to host its own Open Day on August 30, from 10 AM to 2 PM, across the Ourimbah and Gosford locations. This presents another opportunity for individuals considering a return to study or exploring new career paths.

The University of Newcastle’s Open Day exemplifies the growing enthusiasm for higher education in the region, creating a vibrant space for future generations to learn, connect, and envision their future. As interest in university education continues to rise, events like this are crucial in guiding potential students toward their dreams.
