American Signature Furniture and its sister brand, Value City Furniture, are shutting down all their stores following a bankruptcy filing. The company, which has been a part of the U.S. retail landscape for nearly 80 years, is liquidating its assets as it faces ongoing financial difficulties affecting the home furnishings industry.
American Signature Inc. (ASI) is now in the process of closing its remaining locations as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court of the District of Delaware approved the appointment of SB360 Capital Partners, Hilco Global, and Gordon Brothers to oversee the Going Out of Business sales at all remaining stores. As of November 2025, ASI operated 89 stores across the United States, including 79 Value City Furniture outlets and 10 American Signature Furniture locations.
The liquidation sales are currently underway, featuring discounts of up to 50% on a wide array of products, including living room, dining room, and bedroom furniture, as well as mattresses, rugs, lighting, and home decor. Customers can find a comprehensive list of sale locations on ASI’s official website. Despite the closures, five stores initially marked for shutdown are still operational, offering additional discounts. These include four American Signature Furniture locations in Nashville and one Value City Furniture store in Charlotte.
Financial Challenges Prompt Store Closures
The decision to close all stores stems from significant financial and operational challenges within the furniture retail sector. According to bankruptcy filings, declining sales—particularly after the pandemic—played a critical role in ASI’s downfall. Factors such as a downturn in the housing market, broader macroeconomic conditions, rising inflation, increased interest rates, and new tariffs have all contributed to the company’s mounting liabilities.
The Chapter 11 filing allows for an orderly wind-down of operations, but it does not include plans for reorganization or a return to business under the existing brands. Consequently, ASI is pursuing liquidation both in-store and online, with discounts varying by location and inventory.
Impact on Customers and Future Prospects
The store closures also present challenges for customers with pending orders, warranties, or store credits. Many are experiencing delays with outstanding orders and difficulties in obtaining refunds. During this liquidation period, ASI has urged customers to check store-specific policies, as return, delivery, and service terms may differ from location to location. Additionally, gift cards and financing agreements may have expiration dates as the company prepares to cease operations.
Despite these challenges, SB360 President Aaron Miller described the liquidation sale as “unprecedented,” encouraging shoppers to visit early to take full advantage of the discounts available. “The compelling liquidation discounts on stylish furniture for every room of the home will make this a short sale in these stores,” he stated.
The closure of American Signature Furniture and Value City Furniture marks the end of a significant chapter in U.S. furniture retail. This situation underscores the broader difficulties traditional retailers are facing as consumer habits change and economic pressures mount.
