Australia has officially unveiled its first sky garage, a feature that allows residents to access their vehicles directly from their luxury apartments. Located in the Neue Grand development on St Kilda Road in Melbourne, this innovative amenity redefines convenience and status for car enthusiasts.
Sky garages have become a hallmark of luxury living in cities worldwide, enabling homeowners to park their vehicles within their apartments using high-tech elevator systems. The concept eliminates the need for traditional basement parking, creating a seamless experience for residents who can now showcase their prized cars within their living spaces.
Neue Grand has set a new standard in residential luxury by offering this unique feature, which is said to be the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Designed by Growland, the development comprises 18 full-floor residences with panoramic views of the Melbourne skyline and Port Phillip Bay. Each apartment includes its own sky garage, accessed via a high-speed lift that transports vehicles directly from a basement level to the private residence.
The sky garage at Neue Grand features an automated sliding mechanism that positions the vehicle within a glass-enclosed space adjacent to the living area. This design not only enhances accessibility but also turns the parking area into a visually striking element of the home. Each of these expansive residences spans approximately 335 square meters and includes luxurious finishes such as natural stone, timber, and leather, further elevating the living experience.
Construction of Neue Grand was completed in April 2025, with five residences still available for purchase. As this development captures the attention of potential buyers, the trend of integrating sky garages is already extending beyond Melbourne.
In Brisbane, the Spyre Group is set to introduce a similar feature in Moray House, a collection of six apartments located along the Brisbane River. This development will offer two residences equipped with sky garages, allowing residents to drive directly into their homes via a remote-controlled car lift. Andrew Malouf, director of Spyre Group, noted, “The sky garage will appeal to luxury vehicle enthusiasts who want privacy as well as the additional security of garaging their car in their apartment rather than using regular basement parking.”
The sky garage concept has gained traction globally, with notable examples including the Porsche Design Tower in Miami and 200 Eleventh Avenue in New York City, where celebrities such as Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban reside. These developments have popularized the idea of car elevators, showcasing the potential for residential designs that cater to high-end lifestyles.
As cities like Melbourne and Brisbane embrace this luxurious trend, the question remains: will other Australian cities, such as Sydney, follow suit? With the demand for innovative and extravagant apartment features on the rise, the future of sky garages in Australia looks promising.
