Barnes & Noble has officially announced its return to Costa Mesa, California, with a new bookstore location at South Coast Plaza. This store will occupy the former Macy’s Home wing, situated at 3333 Bear Street. With this opening, the iconic bookseller re-establishes its presence in the area after closing its previous location at the Metro Pointe center in 2016 when the lease expired.
The new Barnes & Noble will feature a company-branded B&N Café, providing shoppers with a selection of snacks and beverages. According to the Orange County Register, the café will serve an array of items, including hot coffees, blended beverages, soups, and sandwiches, alongside baked goods. Notable offerings will include roasted chicken noodle soup, tomato caprese sandwiches, and specialty cookies.
Revitalization Efforts and Expansion Plans
Barnes & Noble’s resurgence in Costa Mesa is part of a broader strategy following its acquisition by a private equity firm in 2019. Since then, the company has embarked on a revitalization journey that includes plans to open 60 new stores nationwide this year. The recent openings in nearby areas such as Brea, Tustin, and Orange highlight the company’s commitment to expanding its footprint in Southern California.
“We are still refining our final design, and any information we share right now would be a bit premature,” said Jason Stryker, Head of Real Estate & Development. He further commented, “Our goal is to align our offering in an elevated way similar to what the market will be receptive to, and we intend to have some tests and unique offerings.” This indicates a thoughtful approach to adapting to consumer preferences in the local market.
The store’s opening marks a significant moment for Barnes & Noble, as it seeks to re-engage with the community and enhance the shopping experience at South Coast Plaza. The combination of books and a café environment aims to create a welcoming space for both avid readers and casual shoppers alike.
As the company moves forward with its expansion strategy, the new location at South Coast Plaza is poised to become a valuable addition to the area’s retail landscape, offering a unique blend of literature and culinary delights.
