Canberra is set to undergo a significant transformation with plans for a new aquatic centre located at Commonwealth Park, close to Lake Burley Griffin. The National Capital Authority is actively seeking input from the community on the features and facilities they would like to see in this new centre, which will replace the existing Canberra Olympic Pool.
The proposed aquatic centre is expected to include a blend of indoor and outdoor pools, dedicated children’s splash areas, and various recreational amenities. ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr emphasized the importance of community involvement in the project. “The new centre will be designed to welcome as wide a range of users as possible within the project budget,” he stated. “We are asking Canberrans to share their ideas on what facilities and features are most important—your feedback will help shape this new facility.”
The vision for Commonwealth Park includes not only the aquatic centre but also a permanent year-round Floriade garden and an upgraded Stage 88. This ambitious plan, unveiled in early 2025, aims to rejuvenate the lakeside area of Canberra.
In the 2024 budget, the ACT government committed to moving the existing Civic pool and replacing it with an expanded convention centre. To support this initiative, the federal government, as part of a pre-election commitment, will contribute $100 million to the aquatic centre and convention centre projects, which will be matched by the territory government. In total, the two governments will invest $137.8 million in planning and delivering the aquatic centre.
While a specific timeline for construction has not yet been established, work on the aquatic centre is anticipated to commence during this parliamentary term.
The consultation period for community input opens on September 29, 2024, and will run until November 14, 2024. ACT Senator Katy Gallagher encouraged local residents to participate in this seven-week period, highlighting the project’s significance. “This is a big investment in the future of our city and will deliver a brand new aquatic centre in a central location,” she remarked. “We want to make sure the aquatic centre meets the Canberra community’s expectations, so I’d encourage anyone with an interest in this project to get online and have their say.”
Canberrans, sporting organizations, community groups, and other stakeholders are encouraged to contribute their insights on the desired features of the new aquatic centre. Feedback will inform the design and functionality of the centre, including essential elements such as equipment, amenities, and year-round usability.
Community members can share their thoughts through the ACT government website or at various pop-up information stalls that will be promoted online.
In addition to the aquatic centre, the ACT government has also released plans for a new 2,000-seat Civic theatre, which is set to be constructed at the corner of Vernon Circle and Northbourne Avenue. New artist impressions of this multi-level venue have been made public as the government seeks approval from the National Capital Authority for the project.
With these developments, Canberra is poised for a significant upgrade in recreational facilities, promising enhanced community engagement and modern amenities for residents and visitors alike.
