A cherished retail establishment in Knoxville, known for its extensive selection of books, music, and other physical media, is set to close its doors. McKay’s has announced that it will cease operations at its Knoxville location on May 3, 2026, affecting 54 employees as a result of the closure. This decision follows the recent sale of the property on which the store operates.
McKay’s filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) with the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development, detailing the impending closure. The store, situated at 230 Papermill Place Way, has served the community for nearly four decades, having opened its first Tennessee location in 1985.
Impact on Employees and Community
The closure will affect a significant portion of the workforce, with 49 of the 54 employees identified as union members. In response to this development, the East Local Workforce Development Area’s rapid response team has been notified to assist those impacted during this transition. They will provide necessary resources and support to help employees navigate the job market following the store’s closure.
While the official closing date is set for May, McKay’s has already ceased accepting new inventory and will only allow returns until its final day of operations. Customers can continue to use their McKay’s Trade credit and gift cards until the store closes. The store’s gift cards will remain valid at other McKay’s locations in Tennessee and North Carolina, although no new gift cards will be issued.
A Legacy of Community Engagement
Founded in 1974, McKay’s was conceived as a free-enterprise library, allowing customers to buy, sell, and trade media. The Knoxville location has been a vital part of the local culture, attracting readers and music enthusiasts alike. Over the years, McKay’s expanded to include additional locations in Chattanooga and Nashville, but the Knoxville store has always held a special place in the hearts of its patrons.
As the community prepares to say farewell, McKay’s leaves behind a legacy of service and engagement, marking the end of an era for many long-time customers. The workforce development teams are poised to assist affected employees, ensuring that they receive the support needed to transition into new employment opportunities.
The closing of McKay’s not only impacts its employees but also signifies the loss of a beloved shopping destination for many in Knoxville, representing a broader trend in retail as consumer habits continue to evolve.
