Narrogin Senior High School hosted an interactive careers day on March 15, 2023, aimed at providing Year 9 students with valuable insights into various vocational pathways. This event, organized in collaboration with South Regional TAFE, featured a range of demonstrations and activities designed to engage students in fields such as agriculture, hospitality, and technology.
Students spent the day on the school oval, participating in hands-on experiences that showcased emerging career opportunities. Notably, representatives from **Sensr Solutions** discussed the burgeoning roles created by drones in sectors like agricultural monitoring, construction mapping, and inspections. The event also included a shearing demonstration led by **Rob Carter**, an educator from the **Australian Wool Innovation**, which highlighted the significance of agriculture in the Narrogin region.
In addition to these demonstrations, **Hilltop Cafe**, operating from the school’s Trade Training Centre, provided students insights into the hospitality sector. Another highlight of the day was the virtual reality education experience offered by **Mindflight7**, allowing students to explore different job roles and enhance their understanding of the workforce.
Wendy Sargeantson, the careers practitioner and vocational teacher at Narrogin Senior High School, emphasized the importance of this developmental stage for Year 9 students. “They’re at the exploration stage developmentally and start to think, ‘what career may suit me?’” she explained. “We want to expose them to lots of different careers so that they can make informed choices about their futures.”
Students engaged in a bingo card activity designed to encourage interaction with 19 different stallholders, which included local shire representatives, police, health services, renewable energy organizations, and community groups. This setup not only fostered connections within the community but also provided practical networking opportunities.
Ms. Sargeantson noted that the event aimed to instill in students the confidence to approach professionals for advice about career paths. “It’s not just about career exploration; it’s also about how they could approach someone for guidance on getting started, what subjects to focus on, and planning for the future,” she added.
Overall, the careers day at Narrogin Senior High School reflects a strong commitment to preparing students for their future careers, fostering community involvement, and encouraging exploration of diverse career options. The collaborative efforts of South Regional TAFE and local organizations significantly contributed to the success of this educational initiative.
