A new Mexican brunch restaurant is poised to open in La Jolla, California, at the site of the former Comedor Nishi. Owner Rafael Barragan Rodriguez, who also operates Cazadores Mexican Food and Cotija’s Taco Shop, is spearheading this venture, which aims to introduce a fresh dining experience focused on traditional brunch offerings.

The new establishment, still without a finalized name, will occupy the location at 1109 Wall Street. According to a recent liquor license application, the restaurant will be a family-run operation, with Rodriguez and his two children at the helm. This marks a transition to a third-generation family business, emphasizing their commitment to community-oriented dining.

Rodriguez stated that this concept will not replicate the existing Cazadores or Cotija’s brands. Instead, it will feature an affordable menu with classic Mexican breakfast and lunch items, including tacos, chilaquiles, and huevos rancheros. The brunch menu will rotate, providing casual options throughout the day. This approach aims to serve both local residents and visitors, addressing the scarcity of budget-friendly dining options in the vicinity.

Community Focus and Future Plans

While an official opening date has yet to be announced, Rodriguez and his team are targeting a launch in March 2026. This timeline depends on the completion of construction and necessary permits. The liquor license application has been filed under the name Cazadores Mexican Grill Inc., but Rodriguez clarified that this is merely a procedural step and not indicative of the final branding.

Rodriguez emphasized the importance of providing a quality beverage program, stating, “We want to do good coffee, any coffee you want.” The commitment to offering a diverse range of drinks complements the focus on traditional food offerings.

With decades of industry experience, Rodriguez is eager to pass the reins to his children, setting the stage for a new chapter in their family’s culinary journey. This restaurant aims to uphold the values of accessibility, tradition, and hospitality that have characterized their previous ventures.

As the project progresses, the La Jolla community eagerly anticipates the arrival of this new brunch destination, which promises to blend authentic Mexican cuisine with a welcoming atmosphere for all diners.
