The Young Musicians Award invites young musicians from across the region to compete on a professional stage.

North London Collegiate School (Singapore) has unveiled the Young Musicians Award, a competition designed to provide musical opportunities for young instrumentalists aged 5 to 18 across Asia. This initiative signifies the school’s commitment to combining artistic development with academic rigor, positioning itself as a regional hub for musical excellence.

Expanding Musical Horizons for Young Talent

At North London Collegiate School (Singapore), music is integral to the educational experience. The Young Musicians Award extends this philosophy beyond its student body, inviting aspiring musicians from the region to showcase their talents on a professional stage. The competition has attracted considerable interest, with approximately 50 applicants shortlisted from various countries in Asia. Finalists will perform in the school’s state-of-the-art 700-seat auditorium, designed to simulate the conditions of a professional performance environment.

The award offers more than just performance opportunities; it aims to elevate the artistic journey of young musicians. Through a collaboration with Songwork International, finalists will have access to Singapore’s Lion Studios for professional recording sessions. This experience introduces them to industry-standard production techniques that are typically reserved for advanced training levels. Winners will perform at a gala concert, and selected finalists will have the opportunity to perform alongside a symphony orchestra. Additionally, a scholarship valued at S$5,000 will be awarded to one outstanding musician, reinforcing the school’s investment in long-term artistic growth.

Expertise and Recognition in Classical Music

The judging panel for the Young Musicians Award features prominent figures from the international classical music scene. Notable judges include Joshua Tan, Associate Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, George Harliono, a British concert pianist and Tchaikovsky Competition silver medallist, and Zhi Jong Wang, Professor of Violin at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Their involvement underscores the global perspective that characterizes the education at North London Collegiate School (Singapore), offering invaluable feedback typically found only at conservatoires.

Edward Jeffries, Head of Music (Senior School) and founding lead of the Young Musicians Award, expressed the initiative’s goals: “The NLCS (Singapore) Young Musicians Award was conceived as a platform within Asia for young musicians to share their talent and celebrate their artistry. We aim to give a voice to young musicians from across the region, reflecting our Music Department’s motto: ‘We Aspire to Inspire.'”

By opening the competition to young musicians throughout Asia, North London Collegiate School (Singapore) is enriching the regional classical music landscape. The Young Musicians Award provides an accessible pathway for young instrumentalists to engage in professional performance settings, receive expert feedback, and gain studio recording experience.

This initiative complements and enhances the musical journeys that young artists are already pursuing, contributing to a growing ecosystem of classical music opportunities in the region.
