The Australian government has announced the 2025 Otway Offshore Petroleum Exploration Acreage Release, allowing companies to competitively bid for exploration permits across designated areas. This initiative aims to enhance exploration efforts within the Otway Basin and address potential domestic gas shortages while supporting the transition to a net-zero economy.

Details of the Acreage Release

The release encompasses several areas informed by existing industry nominations. Consultations have taken place with the National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator (NOPTA) and Geoscience Australia to ensure the selection of viable exploration zones. Prior to the issuance of new exploration permits, public consultation will allow stakeholders to provide input on the proposed areas.

Public feedback will play a crucial role in guiding the Offshore Petroleum Joint Authorities as they decide whether to proceed with the offering of exploration permits. This process will also assist bidding companies in understanding the factors they must consider when evaluating permits in the Otway Basin.

Supporting Strategic Initiatives

The Acreage Release aligns with broader initiatives outlined in the Future Gas Strategy, which emphasizes the need for new gas supplies to meet increasing demand during the economy’s transition. By encouraging exploration in the Otway Basin, the government aims to unlock additional petroleum resources, thus mitigating the risk of future gas shortages.

The release package includes comprehensive information about each exploration area, including detailed maps, shapefiles, and bidding instructions. Geoscience Australia has provided geological data on the proposed regions, facilitating informed investment decisions. In addition, revised offshore guidelines are available for companies submitting work bids, following earlier consultations this year aimed at implementing the Future Gas Strategy.

This initiative marks a significant step toward enhancing Australia’s energy security while promoting sustainable exploration practices in the petroleum sector. Stakeholders and potential bidders are encouraged to participate in the consultation process to shape the future of gas exploration in the Otway Basin.
