A new Hong Kong-style street food eatery, Sing Choi Kee, is set to open its first location in Massachusetts at 7 Pleasant Street in Malden. The New York-based chain, which currently operates one restaurant in Flushing and is planning another in West Nyack, aims to bring a taste of its unique culinary offerings to the local community. According to city documents, the venue will occupy the former site of More Than Coffee.
Founded in November 2023, Sing Choi Kee combines traditional Hong Kong café staples with modern twists. The menu features beloved dishes such as dim sum, char siu, and omurice. Additionally, it includes comfort foods like slippery egg over rice, beef pasta, and Hong Kong-style French toast. The eatery is also gaining attention for its diverse selection of bubble teas and its signature ‘Little Bear’ teas and lattes, which are topped with bear-shaped ice cubes — a trend that has quickly captured the interest of social media users.
Sing Choi Kee embraces the cultural influences that emerged following World War II, as reflected in its offerings. The restaurant’s Google Business page notes, “Following the influences of post-World War II British culture on Hong Kong, locals adopted the delightful combination of tea with milk and the enjoyment of delectable cakes. This cultural shift gave birth to the Cha Chaan Tengs, offering quick and affordable dishes catering to the community’s new tastes. At Sing Choi Kee, we take pride in advancing this rich legacy.”
Anticipated Opening and Local Excitement
Recent renovations to the space have been completed, and franchisee Alvin Qu indicated that Sing Choi Kee is tentatively scheduled to open in about one month, pending final inspections. This expansion is generating excitement among local residents eager to experience authentic Hong Kong street food.
