A representative from the United States is currently visiting Uzbekistan to promote a critical minerals agenda vital to US foreign policy. Paolo Zampolli, the White House’s Special Envoy for Global Partnerships, arrived in Tashkent on August 28, 2025, with the intention of strengthening diplomatic ties and expanding trade relationships. The visit aligns with the US government’s emphasis on accessing Uzbekistan’s rich mineral resources and fostering economic collaboration.
Upon his arrival, Zampolli engaged in discussions with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The meetings focused on enhancing the strategic partnership between the two nations. According to a statement from the Uzbek president’s office, “issues of the further expansion of Uzbek-American strategic partnership and multifaceted cooperation were discussed in detail.” The statement also highlighted the significant potential for cooperation across various sectors, including mineral resources, aviation, digital technologies, and education.
Building Ties Through Engagement
The US Embassy in Tashkent noted that Zampolli’s visit includes participation in public diplomacy events aimed at improving the US image in Uzbekistan. This agenda involves commemorating Uzbek Independence Day alongside President Mirziyoyev, engaging with the Uzbek national soccer team, and attending the inauguration of American Corner Tashkent, a venue dedicated to promoting American values and culture.
During a previous engagement in April, Jonathan Henick, the US envoy in Tashkent, remarked on the “unprecedented level” of diplomatic engagement between the United States and Uzbekistan in early 2025. This indicates a growing commitment from the US to deepen its ties with Central Asia, a region rich in resources and strategic importance.
Zampolli, who has a longstanding business relationship with former President Donald Trump, previously served as the Ambassador of the Caribbean island nation of Dominica to the United Nations. His appointment as Special Envoy underscores the current administration’s focus on developing global partnerships, particularly in regions with untapped resources.
