Viking has officially launched the Viking Tonle, its second river cruise ship designed specifically for the Mekong River. This new vessel, which can accommodate 80 guests, features 40 river-facing staterooms in three different categories. The inaugural sailing is set to depart on October 27, 2025, following the success of the Viking Saigon, which was introduced in 2022.

The Mekong River is gaining popularity among travelers seeking unique experiences, steering them away from traditional European waterways. Stretching approximately 4,909 kilometers, the river flows through several countries, including China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It serves as a vital lifeline for numerous communities along its banks and offers a glimpse into the rich cultures and traditions of Southeast Asia.

Features of the Viking Tonle

The Viking Tonle has been purpose-built to navigate the unique challenges of the Mekong River. Among its most attractive accommodations are the Verandah Suites, which include 12 staterooms with walk-out balconies, while other staterooms feature French balconies. The new ship will primarily cruise the lower Mekong, with itineraries often beginning and ending in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi.

While the lower Mekong is well-trodden, the upper Mekong is emerging as a captivating destination. Its wild landscapes require smaller vessels for navigation, making the Viking Tonle particularly well-suited for this region.

Cruising the Mekong offers travelers access to significant cultural sites, including Siem Reap, the gateway to the renowned Angkor Wat temple complex. As travelers seek less conventional routes, the Viking Tonle is positioned to meet this demand effectively.

Viking’s Global Expansion

The launch of the Viking Tonle is part of a broader expansion plan by Viking, which already boasts the largest fleet of river cruise ships in the world, with over 80 vessels. The Swiss-based cruise line has announced its intention to introduce 23 new ships by 2030. This includes the addition of Viking Vela, the first in a series of eco-friendly sea cruise ships designed to operate with minimal environmental impact.

Viking Vela will employ a hybrid propulsion system using liquid hydrogen and fuel cells, currently under development, to achieve zero emissions in sensitive areas like the Norwegian fjords. This innovative approach reflects Viking’s commitment to sustainable cruising, which extends to its river fleet as well.

In addition to its ventures in the Mekong, Viking is also expanding its European river fleet with five new ships expected to enter service this year and another five in 2026. Furthermore, the cruise line is set to launch Viking Amun on the Nile River, which is also purpose-built for its waterway.

As Viking continues to innovate and expand, the launch of the Viking Tonle highlights the company’s dedication to offering travelers unique and enriching experiences on some of the world’s most beautiful rivers. For more information on itineraries and bookings, visit the official Viking website.
