wagin-community-resource-centre-expands-services-for-locals

In the heart of Wagin’s business precinct lies the town’s Community Resource Centre (CRC), a vital hub providing essential services to residents and surrounding districts. Established in 2000 as the Wagin Telecentre, the CRC rebranded in 2010 as part of a statewide initiative aimed at enhancing community support networks. The not-for-profit organisation is governed by a local volunteer management committee and employs five staff members, including Zac Rayne, Riley Mangality, and Darcey Ward.

Jasmine Watson, the CRC manager, highlighted that the Wagin CRC is part of an extensive network comprising 103 centres across 82 local government areas in Western Australia. The primary objectives are to bolster the economic and social capacity of the community while delivering critical services and information on behalf of various government agencies.

The Wagin CRC addresses a broad spectrum of community needs by offering access to information and communication technology, skills training, and lifelong learning opportunities. Watson noted the centre’s commitment to strengthening connections with other community groups, stating, “We are a valuable resource for the rising number of retirees and unemployed residents in Wagin.”

The centre plays a significant role in supporting mental health initiatives, helping to combat isolation among residents. Watson explained, “We provide a physical location for individuals to undertake activities or work on projects in the company of others.” The CRC offers inclusive and innovative programs that cater to all community members.

Many locals visit the CRC for various services, including assistance with Centrelink and Medicare applications. The centre also features a community notice board and offers printing services for business documents, booklets, brochures, flyers, and photographs. Additionally, the Wagin CRC supervises university examinations, hosts business courses, and publishes the bi-weekly Wagin Wool Press local newsletter.

Residents can access further services such as telephones, internet facilities, and room hire through the CRC. Regular activities and events are organised to foster educational and social interactions. These include children’s holiday programs, paint-and-sip events, and workshops covering topics from digital design using Canva to traditional crafts like macrame.

Watson emphasised the centre’s commitment to appealing to all age groups. “We have a significant aged population in Wagin who seek tech support, while families also look for a variety of services. Many visitors come from out of town, especially to get help with Centrelink forms and gun licence applications,” she said. The CRC also engages with local events when appropriate, providing support and resources.

As part of its community involvement, the Wagin CRC aids in advertising and promoting the Wagin Woolorama, a local event that showcases the region’s agricultural heritage. The centre also provides staff support leading up to the event.

Recently, the CRC has faced challenges related to rising damp in its historic building. To address these issues, the organisation has undertaken a refurbishment, including fresh paint and upgrades to the facility. This investment underscores the CRC’s commitment to maintaining a welcoming space for all community members.

The Wagin Community Resource Centre continues to evolve, adapting to meet the diverse needs of its residents while fostering connections and enhancing community engagement.
