Amanda Seyfried has expressed no intention of apologising for her remarks about the late right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, whom she described as “hateful.” Kirk was shot dead on September 10, 2023, during a campus debating session, prompting Seyfried’s comments on social media.
In an interview with Who What Wear, the 40-year-old actress defended her statement, asserting that it was based on “actual reality,” including footage and quotes. She stated, “I commented on one thing… What I said was pretty damn factual, and I’m free to have an opinion, of course.”
Following her initial comment, Seyfried took to Instagram to emphasise the importance of understanding “nuance” in discussions about sensitive topics. She wrote, “We’re forgetting the nuance of humanity… I can get angry about misogyny and racist rhetoric and ALSO very much agree that Charlie Kirk’s murder was absolutely disturbing and deplorable in every way imaginable.”
Seyfried highlighted the broader issue of violence in society, stating, “No one should have to experience this level of violence. This country is grieving too many senseless and violent deaths and shootings. Can we agree on that at least?”
In the interview, she elaborated on her decision to post the follow-up statement, indicating it was crucial for her to reclaim her narrative. “Thank God for Instagram. I was able to give some clarity, and it was about getting my voice back because I felt like it had been stolen and recontextualised,” she explained.
