Blumhouse Productions has acquired the rights to adapt the acclaimed comic series Something Is Killing the Children, published by Boom! Studios. Created by James Tynion IV and illustrated by Werther Dell’Edera, the comic follows monster hunter Erica Slaughter, who possesses the unique ability to see creatures that remain invisible to adults. The story is set in Archer’s Peak, Wisconsin, where terrifying monsters have begun to prey on the town’s children.
Since its launch, Something Is Killing the Children has achieved impressive sales, exceeding five million copies worldwide. The series has also garnered critical acclaim, winning multiple Eisner Awards for its compelling storytelling and artistry.
Blumhouse’s acquisition follows a competitive bidding process that included major players like Lionsgate and Netflix. The streaming giant had initially planned to adapt the series for television, with renowned director Mike Flanagan and producer Tracy Major attached to the project. However, after their departure, the Dark showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese stepped in to develop the series. Ultimately, in late 2024, Netflix decided to pass on the project, paving the way for Blumhouse’s involvement.
The production company plans to create both a live-action feature film and an adult animated series based on the comic. Notably, Tynion is set to direct the television adaptation, while Dell’Edera will serve as co-executive producer. This strategic move aligns with Blumhouse’s recent success in the horror genre. Their adaptation of Joe Hill’s short story The Black Phone in 2021 proved to be a box office hit, and their film based on the video game Five Nights at Freddy’s has become their highest-grossing movie to date.
As Blumhouse continues to expand its portfolio, the adaptation of Something Is Killing the Children represents another significant addition to its growing horror empire. With a compelling source material and a dedicated fanbase, expectations are high for this upcoming adaptation.
